==Weather== | |||
The majority of the County has a traditional continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are generally hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms, while winters tend to be cool to cold. Snow is common in the hills and northern plains, but less likely in the southern plains, where winters are milder. Extreme weather is rare, although tornadoes do occur on the southern plains. | |||
===Temperature=== | |||
In the summer, County highs average in the mid- to high-80’s, dipping into the 60’s at night. In the winter, daytime highs are as frequently above freezing as below, while nighttime lows often dip into the teens. | |||
===Humidity=== | |||
The County is very humid, particularly in the morning, when humidity averages 80-90%, though the afternoons tend to be less humid, in the 50-70% range (highest in the winter months). In the south, the constant breeze off Wooly Bay protects the south shore area from this high humidity . Consequently, although temperatures on the south shore are the same as on the southern plains, the lower humidity gives the region a cooler feel. Inside the Mistmarsh, humidity remains universally high (80-90%) all day long. | |||
===Precipitation=== | |||
The County receives almost 40 inches of precipitation annually, with mid-summer offering the fewest wet days (1 in 3) but the highest amount of falling precipitation (4″+/month), while mid-winter presents many more wet days (1 in 2), but the lowest precipitation totals (>2″/month). Snow has been recorded as early as November and as late as May, though is usually limited to December through March, with an average of 4-6″ falling in each month. | |||
===Lake Effect=== | |||
The entire north shore area, including all of Mavenshire, is heavily influenced by the presence of the Nyr Dyv, which (A.) keeps the region cooler than the rest of the north, (B.) gives it a higher annual and monthly precipitation totals than the rest of the County, and (C.) accounts for frequent morning fogs, with October through December being the foggiest months. | |||
===Tornadoes=== | |||
Tornado activity is limited almost exclusively to the spring and early summer, when an average of 20 per year will actually touch down. Of these, half (50%) can be classified as “weak”, causing damage over only a very limited area, and with relatively mild winds. Most of the rest (45%) are “strong”, which can cause devastating effects over a wider and longer path, with more destructive wind speeds. The final few (5%) will be “violent” storms, with the largest destructive footprint and most catastrophic wind speeds. | |||

In the normal course of their duties, Regulars serve as line troops under Defenders. However, when troops are mustered, each Regular is temporarily promoted to sergeant, overseeing up to 10 mustered troops. Regardless of whether they are currently serving as a Regular or a Sergeant, the following applies: | |||
* | * Annual retainer: 22 gold dubloons | ||
* Armor: Steel conical helmet; hard leather chest/back plate; soft black leather leggings; gauntlets, and calf-high boots; waist-length gold tabard bearing Greyhawk CoA | |||

===Guardsmen=== | ===Guardsmen=== | ||
The Guard keeps the peace and investigates routine crimes. They are Professional peacekeepers and law enforcement officials. They also can serve as sergeants (rare) when large numbers are mustered. In walled cities, Guardsmen also man the city walls. When faced with complex situations, the Guard may request assistance from one of the local Knights of the Ram. | |||

The County of Greyhawk currently has no navy, though the Count has plans to implement one as soon as possible. | |||
Latest revision as of 01:02, 10 January 2021
Formation: Lady Amian, KCmR (OR-2, retired) negotiated a deal between Lord Aphic and the Duke of Urnst to cede the land between the Nyr Dyv and Wooly Bay/Bright Desert, and between the Selintan River and Cairn Hills/Abbor-Alz to establish the County of Greyhawk
Administrative Breakdown
The County is officially known as The County of Greyhawk.
The County is divided into 2 Baronies
- The Barony of Selintan is divided into 2 Provinces and one Shire
- Halverine
- Olmarr
- Mavenshire
- The Barony of Amian is divided into 2 Provinces
- Kilma
- Stythe
- The Baronies are each ruled by a Baron who is a sworn vassal of the Count of Greyhawk.
- The Provinces operate under administrative control of a Baronet, who is a sworn vassal of both the appropriate Baron and the Count.
- The Provinces are named for four past Lord Mayors of the Independent City of Greyhawk.
- The Provincial capital is a Keep, a walled complex that serves as a combination administrative seat, barracks and staging location for internal troops, and military headquarters.
- The daily running of the Keep is given to a Sheriff, assisted by a Master-at-Arms, both of whom are members of the Order of the Lion.
- Mavenshire is the private holding of the Count; however, the Count rarely bothers himself with direct administration of Mavenshire. Instead, he leaves the day-to-day decision-making in the hands of an appointed administrator.
- The Provinces and Mavenshire are divided into boroughs. For simplicity, each borough is named for its chief population center. (Note: Exceptions are Greyhawk City and Hardby, which are not part of any borough.)
- Each borough head is a Reeve who is selected by the Baronet or, in the case of Mavenshire, by the Count or his designated Administrator.
Borders
- North – Nyr Dyv
- West – Treaty line with Duchy of Urnst through Cairn Hills and Abbor-Alz
- South – Wooly Bay
- East – Selintan River
- Capital – Greyhawk City
Leadership
- Leader: Count Aphic, 1st Lord Greyhawk
- Ruling Seat: Castle Greyhawk
- Residences: Undre, Greysmere, and Orz
- Apartments: Greyhawk City, Hardby
The Count’s Court
Ministers, advisors, and others appointed to help the Count run the country. Like most Courts, the composition of and appointment to the Court is strictly at the whim of the Count. The most senior members of the Court are typically given titles junior to the Count or inducted into the Order of the Lion.
- County Council (meets 2x/year, advisory only, 19 members):
- The Knight Grand Marshal of the Order of the Ram (Chair)
- The Barons of Selintan and Amian
- The Lord Mayor of Greyhawk City and Mayor of Hardby
- The Defender Colonel
- 13 public representatives (1 from the 3 largest towns in each Province, and 1 from the largest town in Mavenshire). Currently:
- Elmshire (4000)
- Fort Lehman (3900)
- Greatrock (3500)

Weather
The majority of the County has a traditional continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are generally hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms, while winters tend to be cool to cold. Snow is common in the hills and northern plains, but less likely in the southern plains, where winters are milder. Extreme weather is rare, although tornadoes do occur on the southern plains.
Temperature
In the summer, County highs average in the mid- to high-80’s, dipping into the 60’s at night. In the winter, daytime highs are as frequently above freezing as below, while nighttime lows often dip into the teens.
Humidity
The County is very humid, particularly in the morning, when humidity averages 80-90%, though the afternoons tend to be less humid, in the 50-70% range (highest in the winter months). In the south, the constant breeze off Wooly Bay protects the south shore area from this high humidity . Consequently, although temperatures on the south shore are the same as on the southern plains, the lower humidity gives the region a cooler feel. Inside the Mistmarsh, humidity remains universally high (80-90%) all day long.
Precipitation
The County receives almost 40 inches of precipitation annually, with mid-summer offering the fewest wet days (1 in 3) but the highest amount of falling precipitation (4″+/month), while mid-winter presents many more wet days (1 in 2), but the lowest precipitation totals (>2″/month). Snow has been recorded as early as November and as late as May, though is usually limited to December through March, with an average of 4-6″ falling in each month.
Lake Effect
The entire north shore area, including all of Mavenshire, is heavily influenced by the presence of the Nyr Dyv, which (A.) keeps the region cooler than the rest of the north, (B.) gives it a higher annual and monthly precipitation totals than the rest of the County, and (C.) accounts for frequent morning fogs, with October through December being the foggiest months.
Tornadoes
Tornado activity is limited almost exclusively to the spring and early summer, when an average of 20 per year will actually touch down. Of these, half (50%) can be classified as “weak”, causing damage over only a very limited area, and with relatively mild winds. Most of the rest (45%) are “strong”, which can cause devastating effects over a wider and longer path, with more destructive wind speeds. The final few (5%) will be “violent” storms, with the largest destructive footprint and most catastrophic wind speeds.

Knights of the Order of the Lion
The Order of the Lion (OL) is a civil order that is created in four classes:
- Knight Grand Marshal (OL-1/GM)
- Knight Marshals (OL-1)
- Knight Commanders (OL-2)
- Knights (OL-3)
The number of holders of the OR is not fixed and is entirely at the whim of the Count. Holders of all Classes serve as the Count’s personal representatives. Class awards are not made sequentially. Rather, once inducted into the Order, a holder is granted the class that goes with the position they currently hold. Upon a change of position, the holder is reassigned to a new class. It is also possible to be punitively demoted or removed from the Order altogether. The Count may choose to reward Knights who are reassigned to a lower class, based on the quality and longevity of their service at the higher level. Such rewards are not defined, and are not mandatory.
Knight Grand Marshal (OL-1/GM)
The Count is always the of the Order
Knight Marshals (OL-1)
Knight Marshals (OL-1) hold the highest County positions, almost always as Ministers to the Count’s Court. At all times, they speak as the Count, which means that decisions and promises they make, even without the Count’s prior approval, legally obligate the Count. Although not true peers or nobility, all OL-1 are entitled to be called “Lord/Lady”
Knight Commanders (OL-2)
Knight Commanders (OL-2) fill high (though not the highest) County positions such as Sheriffs and Deputy/Junior Ministers to the Count’s Court. They speak on behalf of the Count when passing on his decisions and promises, but only have limited authority to issue commands, edicts, etc. without the Count’s prior approval. Such statements do legally obligate the Count. The extent of this authority is different for each OL-2, and is subject to frequent change.
Knights (OL-3)
Knights (OL-3) are either (1) holders of relatively powerful County positions (e.g., Masters-at-Arms), (2), those being considered, groomed, or trained to hold an OL-1 or OL-2 position, and (3) retired or demoted Knights. They only ever speak on behalf of the Count. Their words never obligate the Count.
Regalia and retainers
Knights of the Order of the Ram
In both peacetime and wartime, the knights’ primary responsibility is to carry out the Count’s orders. At times of peace, as servants of the Ministry of Security (aka, The Chancellery), they are the Lord Chancellor’s eyes and ears around the County, and can assume a supervisory capacity in sensitive or high profile criminal investigations at the Lord Chancellor’s request. In all matters of war, the Count assumes complete control of the Order. Knights of the Order are frequently sent abroad to ensure the County’s interests are being looked after. A senior Knight holds a permanent position on the Command Staff in the conflict with Iuz.
Muster Ability
All knights have the authority to muster troops, up to the following limits:
| Rank | Max # of Patrols Commanded | Maximum Troop Strength |
|---|---|---|
| OR-1(GM) | 64 reinforced Patrols (the entire D. Corps) | 1 DCL + 4 DCP + 64 DG + 640 SGT + 6,400 PVT = 7,109 |
| OR-1 | 32 reinforced Patrols (2 D. Columns) | 2 DCP + 32 DG + 320 SGT + 3,200 PVT = 3,554 |
| OR-2 | 16 reinforced Patrols (1 D. Column) | 1 DCP + 16 DG + 160 SGT + 1,600 PVT = 1,777 |
| OR-3 | 8 reinforced patrols (2 D. Groups) | 2 DL + 8 DG + 80 SGT + 800 PVT = 890 |
| OR-4 | 4 reinforced patrols (1 D. Group) | 1 DL + 4 DG + 40 SGT + 400 PVT = 445 |
Duties
- Enforce the Count’s will in all areas of the County
- Represent County interests in foreign conflicts
- Can oversee sensitive or high-profile criminal investigations
- Can muster commoners to serve as combat troops
- Senior officers over mustered combat troops
- Patrols monitor and defend County roads and borders
Regalia and retainers
Defenders
The Defenders’ primary responsibility is to patrol the County’s roads and borders. When Knights of the Ram order commoners mustered, Defenders also serve as middle officers over the troops. Unless supervising mustered troops, the Defenders are organized as follows:
| Unit | Leader | Composition |
|---|---|---|
| Corps | Defender Colonel (DCL) | 64 Patrols 4 DCP+16 DL+64 DG+640=724 |
| Column | Defender Captain (DCP) | 16 Patrols 4 DL+16 DG+160=180 |
| Group | Defender Lieutenant (DL) | 8 Patrols 4 DG+40=44 |
| Patrol | Defender of Greyhawk (DG) | 10 Patrolmen (“Regulars”) |
Note: A DCL or DCP, although not a member of any chivalric order, is entitled to be addressed as “Sir” or “Lady”.
The Defenders of Greyhawk organization operate County-wide, across all Baronial and Provincial borders.The Corps Headquarters is in Marsh Keep (Blue on the map). The four Column Headquarters are circled in green.

Regalia and Retainers
- Defender of Greyhawk = (64) Leads a Patrol of 10 Regulars
- Defender Lieutenant = (16) Leads a Group of 4 Patrols
- Defender Captain = (4) Leads a Column of 4 Groups
- Defender Colonel = (1) Top-ranked Defender
- All are junior/middle officers over mustered combat troops
Patrolmen
In the normal course of their duties, Regulars serve as line troops under Defenders. However, when troops are mustered, each Regular is temporarily promoted to sergeant, overseeing up to 10 mustered troops. Regardless of whether they are currently serving as a Regular or a Sergeant, the following applies:
- Annual retainer: 22 gold dubloons
- Armor: Steel conical helmet; hard leather chest/back plate; soft black leather leggings; gauntlets, and calf-high boots; waist-length gold tabard bearing Greyhawk CoA
- Weapons: Longsword, dagger
Guardsmen
The Guard keeps the peace and investigates routine crimes. They are Professional peacekeepers and law enforcement officials. They also can serve as sergeants (rare) when large numbers are mustered. In walled cities, Guardsmen also man the city walls. When faced with complex situations, the Guard may request assistance from one of the local Knights of the Ram.
Guard organization
- Captain of the Guard
- 48 total (1 per City over 16,000 population + 1 per Borough)
- A CotG, although not a member of any chivalric order, is entitled to be addressed as “Sir” or “Lady”
- Chief Constable – Supervises up to 4 watches or several towns
- 1 Chief Constable at 8,000 population, +1 for every 16,000 additional population
- Supervises a Watch of 10 Guardsmen
- Constable
Greyhawk City is currently the only town large enough to fall under these strictures. Elsewhere, the Baronets arrange the strength and number of Guardsmen and their jurisdictions. Although actual numbers will vary, a typical arrangement is:
- 1 Captain of the Guard per Borough
- 1 Chief Constable who oversees several towns or villages
- 1 Constable per 10 Guardsmen in a town or village

Note: Barons, Baronets, and other persons of standing may retain at their own expense a guard force to protect their persons, families, and holdings, but are forbidden from permanently maintaining “sizeable” forces (though “sizeable” is not further defined).
The County of Greyhawk currently has no navy, though the Count has plans to implement one as soon as possible.
