Races

In Harath, there are ten main character races; Broos, Centaurs, Dwarfs, Elves, Halflings, Humans, Ogres, Orcs, Trolls, and Winged Men. The rules are written assuming you are playing a human. If you choose to play a character that belongs to a race other than human, the following racial modifiers apply. You can, of course, play any race you can dream up, provided the GM agrees. For any race not listed here, you and the GM will have to agree on the racial modifiers that apply.

All listed items automatically apply to the selected race. The number in parentheses can mean various things:

  • For Attributes, Abilities, and Disabilities, the number relates to the level. It indicates that your character’s playing level is higher or lower than the level you actually “purchase” with CP. In other words, if the racial modifier is Str (-2), and you pay 10 CP for Str at level 4, your character will actually play at Str level 2. If you want your character to play at Str level 4, you will have to purchase Str level 6 for 21 CP. Conversely, if the racial modifier is Str (+2), and you pay 10 CP for Str level 4, your character will actually play at Str level 6.
  • For secondary statistics that you simply select, the number relates to the average statistic number. For instance, “Hgt (+3)” means that the average height of the race is 3 taller than human average. Since human average is 18, the average Hgt of the race in question is 21. On the other hand, for secondary statistics that are derived from the character’s Attributes, calculate the statistic in the usual way, then include the modifier. For example, if you character’s Quick=5 and Dex=7, his Reaction speed would be 6. However, if the character’s race has Reaction (-2), your character will play with a R of 4.
  • For Skills, the numbers equate to the level of the Skill that your character automatically gets without paying CP for it. You can purchase additional levels as if starting from level 1. For instance, if the Race in question has Musical Ability (2), you need not pay any CP to get Musical Ability at level 2. If you want your character to have Musical Ability (4), you need to pay 3 CP for the additional 2 levels (that is, as if you were buying levels 1 and 2, not 7 CP as if you were buying levels 3 and 4).

Note: Chemistry is a reflection of how well one person likes another on first meeting. The Chem roll modifiers in this section indicate the relative level of chemistry between humans and each particular race. The chart further down the page provides information on how various races view each other, in general.

Gender

The gender of your character is up to you, and is either male or female. In game terms, assume standard female Hgt is (-1) from males of any species.
